Mission in Portugal is set in peaceful countryside near Tomar, in central Portugal. Surrounded by open land and natural beauty, the location offers a calm environment for prayer, walking, reflection and spiritual rest, while remaining within easy reach of Tomar’s historic centre.
Tomar is crossed by the River Nabão and is known for its attractive streets, gardens, churches and remarkable architectural heritage. Visitors can explore the historic centre, enjoy peaceful riverside walks and discover a part of Portugal that combines natural tranquillity with centuries of history.

Tomar is often known as the Templar City because of the important role played by the Knights Templar in its foundation and development.
In 1160, the Knights Templar began building a castle on the hill overlooking Tomar under the leadership of Gualdim Pais, the order’s master in Portugal. The castle became an important stronghold and spiritual centre for the Templars.
At the heart of the castle complex is the Convent of Christ, now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its oldest place of worship is the Charola, a distinctive circular Templar church associated with the order’s traditions and its spiritual connection to Jerusalem.
Following the suppression of the Knights Templar in the early fourteenth century, much of their work and property in Portugal passed to the newly created Order of Christ. Tomar later became the headquarters of this order, which was closely connected with Prince Henry the Navigator and Portugal’s age of maritime exploration.
Over the centuries, the original Templar fortress developed into an extraordinary complex of chapels, cloisters and monastic buildings. Today, the Convent of Christ remains one of Portugal’s most important historic and spiritual landmarks.
While Mission in Portugal is a new and independent Christian project, its location places it within a region shaped by a long history of faith, worship and Christian community. This rich heritage provides a meaningful setting for a retreat destination dedicated to prayer, renewal and drawing closer to God.
Mission in Portugal is a planned Christian retreat destination near Tomar, in the heart of Portugal.
Set within approximately eight acres of peaceful countryside, the site will include two properties and a chapel. Our vision is to create a welcoming place where individuals, families, churches and small groups can step away from everyday pressures, spend time with God and experience spiritual and physical renewal.

We hope to develop this Mission in Portugal as a place of Christian worship, hospitality and retreat.
The chapel will be at the heart of the mission, with Christian worship planned for Sundays, throughout the year. The site will also offer opportunities for personal retreats, prayer, reflection, fellowship and quiet rest.
Whether visiting for a worship service, a short stay or a longer retreat, guests will be welcomed into a peaceful environment shaped by Christian faith and hospitality.
